Director Kabir Khan and Salman Khan have delivered several fan-favourite films over the years, including Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015). While both films enjoyed successful theatrical runs, Kabir recently revealed that their collaboration wasn’t always smooth. In a recent interview, the director reflected on his early days in the industry and his journey toward becoming a mainstream filmmaker.

While talking to IndiaTv-ShowBiz, the New York director shed some light on how his first movie with Salman came to be and how producer Aditya Chopra convinced him. He said, “I remember Adi telling me to make a film with a big star, and I asked him the reason behind it. He told me that ‘Kabir, it (making a film with a big star) is a different beast and a different film altogether, and I feel that you can now step up to that.’ I thought it was very interesting, and then we wrote Tiger.”

Kabir Khan further spoke about working with Salman Khan and how he factored in his status as a megastar while preparing the script for the film. Kabir said, “I never thought that I would have to do something in a specific way just because Salman was there. It’s just that the storyteller in me wanted to do certain things because I knew he would be able to carry it off. Some things change when you work with a star of that calibre, and you do many things differently.”

Though all looked great on paper, Kabir was about to begin shooting with one of the biggest stars of Bollywood, and he admitted that there were some challenges with something like that. “When we reached the set, however, there was a lot of tussling between me and Salman. I have spoken about this before. It was just the third film of my career, and here I was dealing with Salman at his peak. It was also his first time working with Yash Raj Films, and there was a lot of churning.”

He mentioned how both of them kept each other in check and said, “Sometimes I had to pull him down and stop him from going overboard; sometimes he pushed me to do more.” He also mentioned that both of them were opinionated about their work, but they somehow learnt to work with each other. “Some discussions were amicable, and some left one of us sulking. Even though Tiger was not completely in my control, I feel that something interesting happened between the two of us and the energy that we had formed.”
