Border 2 is one of the most highly anticipated films, scheduled to hit theatres next year. JP Dutta’s daughter Nidhi Dutta is all set to take the franchise forward with a dynamic cast. In an exclusive interview with SCREEN, Nidhi, the co-producer and writer of Border 2, opened up about the legacy of Border and working on the upcoming film with Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Dhawan and Ahan Shetty.
Talking about expectations that the audience might have from Border 2, considering the huge success of Border, Nidhi says, “I wouldn’t use the word pressure, I would call it a responsibility. I think it’s a very big responsibility and a blessing to be able to do this. I am glad that I have the opportunity to tell more stories from the 1971 war and take the franchise forward. I am blessed to be his (JP Dutta) daughter, because of which I have the background and knowledge to be able to write a story like this and do this.”
She adds, “The fact that I am able to do this is only because I am his child. I am so honoured. I am really hoping that the armed forces are proud of what we are doing and then the audience.”

Directed by Anurag Singh, Sunny Deol will reprise his role in Border 2 with new actors like Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Dhawan, and Ahan Shetty joining the star cast. Nidhi Dutta emphasises that the buzz regarding the casting is similar to Border. “I think it is going to be so much like Border, because even during that film when the casting happened of Sunny uncle, Suniel uncle, and Akshaye, everyone was very intrigued thinking what combination is this and how this will work out. To have Sunny uncle here with his expertise, it is way more his franchise than mine,” she says.
Nidhi continues, “Having Diljit and Varun with their energy and passion to be a part of the movie is lovely. They both are so excited. We also have Ahan, who again comes with a huge responsibility because of what his father has done in Border. I feel elated when I see all of them working together. At the end, whichever actor you take, they are playing real-life heroes who fought for our country. That in itself is a noble thing.”
Ask her if there were any tips or tricks that her father JP Dutta gave before kickstarting the film, and she replies, “Someone asked him, ‘Aapne kya sikha ke bheja hai apni beti ko? (What have you taught your daughter?)’ I was in the room at that time and he just looked at him and said, ‘Kamaal ki baat hai ki mujhe kuch sikhaana hi nahi pada.’ He doesn’t even realise this, but I learn from him every day. He teaches me unknowingly in everything that he says or does.”
