Filmmaker Apoorva Lakhia said that he believes his equation with Ram Charan hasn’t changed too much over the years, but revealed that the actor has stopped answering his calls after his recent success. Apoorva and Charan worked together on the ill-fated 2013 film Zanjeer, a remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s hit film from the 1970s.
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Apoorva said that while Charan’s wife answers his calls, the actor himself seems to be too busy to respond these days. Charan achieved worldwide fame after starring in SS Rajamouli’s hit film RRR last year, alongside Jr NTR. Asked if their equation changed after Zanjeer flopped, the filmmaker said, “No, he’s a really good friend of mine. In fact, I’ve visited him quite often after that as well, but he doesn’t answer my calls now.”
Last week, the filmmaker had spoken about Zanjeer’s critical and commercial failure. He said that he’d been set up for success, so the reality of the film flopping came as a bit of a shock. “I had the biggest star cast, I had the biggest platform. It didn’t work. Getting Ram Charan, getting Priyanka, getting Sanjay Dutt… You name it, we had it. Maybe people didn’t like the hero, maybe it was the wrong time to introduce a South Indian star (in Bollywood). Now, if Ram Charan comes and does a film in Hindi, he’s rocking. It’s unpredictable, but the main thing is to believe in yourself,” he said.
Ram Charan has now set his sights on Hollywood, after attracting the attention of the West with RRR. He confirmed in several interviews that he’d taken meetings with Hollywood studios in the aftermath of the film’s success, and was present in the Dolby Theatre when the film won an Oscar for Best Original Song.
