Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has been winning hearts on international frontiers as he attends the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. SRK’s film Devdas will also be screened at this festival. On Sunday, the actor sat down for a conversation about films, his journey, and the industry during a session of the Locarno Film Festival. During the discussion, he was asked about his experience with Devdas and the superstar revealed he had some serious apprehensions before doing this film.
Shah Rukh Khan also said that he initially said no to Sanjay Leela Bhansali, after which the filmmaker was planning to put Devdas on the backburner. At the film festival, Shah Rukh Khan revealed that Devdas was his mother’s favorite film. However, on a personal level, SRK did not want this character to be perceived or inspire people the wrong way.
Talking about the same he said, “Devdas is a very special film, it was a film my mother used to love watching, my dad also used to talk about it. It is one of the greatest classics remade in the country. It is about a guy who is an alcoholic, doesn’t commit to a girl, and goes away. At that time, at my age I could not find any essence in it, many years later when Mr Sanjay Leela Bhansali came down and said he wanted me to be Devdas, I said, ‘No, he is a loser, an alcoholic, I am too cool to be Devdas’. Before leaving he just said one thing that still sticks with me, he said, ‘I would not make this film if not with you because your eyes are like Devdas.’ For a year he didn’t cast anyone, then we met again and I said yes to the film.”
Further, Shah Rukh Khan added how working with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit Nene, and Jackie Shroff was a pleasure. But it was something else that bothered him. “I was privileged to work with Aishwarya and Madhuri in the same film, it was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life, to play that character. I don’t like to play characters that demean women, I didn’t want him to be liked in the film for the reason that he disses a woman and doesn’t commit to her, I wanted him to come across as a person who is spineless and not somebody you should look up to. Bhansali made the film beautifully, but I don’t think anybody wants to be Devdas, it is not a character you take back home. I just didn’t want a character who has commitment issues with women to become popular in a different sense, I think I achieved that,” said the Jawan actor.
He also joked that while people think he worked very hard for the film and added, “Sanjay Leela Bhansali takes long to shoot films, due to artistic reasons. During Devdas, I used to drink for the role for many nights, otherwise, I don’t. I would have alcohol, and then one night Madhuri would be dancing, one night Aishwarya would be dancing, and I would just be drinking there with Mr. Jackie Shroff, at the end of the day people would tell me I put in a lot of hard work and did a great job. Half of the film was like that.”
SRK assured the interviewer that despite his views, Devdas was a good choice of film to be picked for the festival and he hoped it was liked by all those who saw it.
