A day after the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced that it has debarred the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) from offering open and distance learning and online programmes for January-February 2023, July-August 2023 and January-February 2024 sessions, the institute has issued a statement stating that they are in the “process of examining the notice and working with all concerned to address the issue and resolve the situation at the earliest.”

While the commission has warned students against taking admission in any of the online and open and distance learning courses, the NMIMS, in a statement, announced that the “UGC mandate is not applicable and does not affect any of our full-time and/or offline programmes.”

On Tuesday, the official UGC notification stated, “Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Maharashtra has not adhered to the UGC regulations and is in gross violations with regard to functioning of the Centre for Internal Quality Assurance (CIQA), quality of Self Learning Material and e-Learning Material (e-LM), nomenclature of Centre for Distance and Online Learning.”

Meanwhile, the students enrolled in the online programmes have started reacting on social media handles. They are questioning UGC’s decision. A user who claims to be NMIMS student is asking for a refund while many are requesting the commission to roll back their decision

As per the UHC, NMIMS was not “following the fee refund policy promulgated by the UGC.” The action is being taken after receiving “multiple complaints from various stakeholders regarding the same.”

The institution will be allowed to offer open and distance learning and online courses from July-August 2024 session “pursuant to an inspection/on-site visit by the UGC and after obtaining necessary approvals from the UGC.”
