NEET UG 2024 Exam Updates: Paper level moderate to difficult, exam analysis here

Biology was largely based on the NCERT syllabus, but included a few tricky questions that tested deeper understanding rather than rote memorisation. Chemistry was a mix of conceptual and practical questions that required a clear understanding of the fundamentals. 

Biology was the easy to moderate exam, and most of the questions were asked from NCERT curriculum only, Viijay said while analysing the paper.

Biology had the highest weightage and consisted mostly of questions directly from or based on NCERT textbooks. The questions spanned both Botany and Zoology, with an emphasis on Human Physiology, Genetics, and Plant Physiology. Unlike previous years, this year's question papers featured 6 figure-based and three direction-based questions, along with 30 'match the following' and 17 statement-based questions. As 30% of the questions were of the 'match the following' type, some students found the paper a bit lengthy, the CEO of MTG Learning Media said.

Accoring to MTG Learning Media, the Chemistry section was a balanced mix of physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry. The questions ranged from straightforward factual questions based on direct concepts from the NCERT textbooks to more application-based questions. The highest weightage was given to 'Organic Chemistry: Some Basic Principles and Techniques. Out of 50 questions, 9 were numerical-based, 7 involved matching the following, and 5 were statement-based.

The chemistry paper was easier than last year's NEET exam. Physical chemistry was the toughest, followed by organic and inorganic chemistry, and questions from thermodynamics, kinetics, and periodic table were included in the exam, Motion Education said.

“Where the instances of ‘paper leak’ are being claimed are completely false and it is being done just to sensationalise news. In an isolated incident at Girls Higher Secondary Adarsh Vidya Mandir, Mantown, Sawai Madhopur, students were given English medium question paper by mistake and by the time the invigilator was correcting the mistake, students forcefully walked out of the exam hall with the question paper.

As per the rules students are only allowed to exit the hall with the question paper after the exam, but some students walked out forcefully. Due to this, the question paper was circulated on the internet around 4 pm, but by that time the exam had already started at all other stations across the country. So, there has not been any ‘leak’ of NEET UG question paper,” a senior NTA official told indianexpress.com.

As the NEET 2024 exam concludes today, the overall difficulty level of the exam was easy to moderate. While physics and Chemistry were a bit lengthy and easy to moderate compared to last year's NEET exam, Biology was also moderate.

* Physics was easy to moderate but a bit lengthy. There were more questions from NCERT, especially class 11. Apart from this, there were questions about Thermodynamics and optics.

A total of 24,612 medical aspirants took the NEET in Maharashtra's Latur district, its coordinator Giridhar Reddy said. He told PTI 24,882 students had registered but 270 did not turn up. There were 54 centres in the district, comprising 46 in Latur tehsil, three each in Udgir and Nilanga and two in Ahmedpur," he said.

According to officials, 2,81,872 students had registered for NEET UG in Maharashtra. 

An MBBS student who appeared in place of a NEET aspirant in the medical entrance exam on Sunday was detained along with five others, including the candidate, in Rajasthan's Bharatpur, police said. Preliminary investigation revealed that Abhishek Gupta, a government college student, was part of a racket being run by his collegemate Ravi Meena, who had allegedly taken Rs 10 lakh from candidate Rahul Gurjar, reported news agency, PTI.

An MBBS student who appeared in place of a NEET UG aspirant in NEET UG 2024 on Sunday was detained along with five others, including the candidate, in Rajasthan's Bharatpur, police said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Abhishek Gupta, a government college student, was part of a racket being run by his collegemate Ravi Meena, who had allegedly taken Rs 10 lakh from candidate Rahul Gurjar, they said.

"At an examination centre, Abhishek was found impersonating Rahul Gurjar. On suspicion, the invigilator handed him over to the police. During initial interrogation, he told police that he was accompanied by five others," Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Aklesh Kumar said.

He said that his associates were sitting in a car outside the examination centre, Master Adityendra School under the Mathura Gate police station area. All the accused are being interrogated and further action will be taken in due course, the ASP said.

Besides Gupta, Meena and Gurjar, those detained were identified as Amit, Dayaram and Suraj Singh, according to police.

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya shared that the total number of MBBS seats in the country has increased to 1,08,940 and PG seats to 70,674. While it was only 51,348 in 2014, the minister claimed as many as 57,592 new MBBS seats have been introduced in the past 10 years between 2014 and 2024.

The tie-breaking method to be used by NTA is as follows:

– Candidates who score higher marks or percentage in Biology (Botany/Zoology).

– Candidates who score higher marks in Chemistry.

– Candidates who score higher marks in Physics.

– Candidates who have few incorrect answers than correct answers in all the subjects.

– Candidates who have the lowest proportion of incorrect responses to correct responses in Biology (Botany and Zoology).

– Candidates who have the lowest ratio of incorrect answers, in Chemistry, to correct answers.

– Candidates who have a lesser percentage of attempted incorrect answers in Physics.

– Candidate older in age.

– NEET application number in ascending number.

The paper will have four sections-- Physics, Chemistry, Zoology and Botany. Each section will be further divided into two parts-- A and B. Part A will have 35 questions, all of which need to be answered. Part B will have 15 questions out of which 10 need to be answered. Section A will be for 140 marks, section B will be for 40 marks. The maximum marks for the paper is 720. 

As per the NTA the following seats are available students who qualify NEET UG 2024 under different quota:-

-- All India Quota Seats

-- State Government Quota Seats

-- Central Institutions/ universities/ deemed universities

-- State/Management/ NRI Quota Seats in Private Medical / Dental Colleges or any Private University

-- Central Pool Quota Seats

-- All seats including NRI Quota as well as Management Quota, are in private unaided/ aided minority/ non-minority medical colleges.
 
-- AIIMS Institutes across India/JIPMER.

-- The counselling for successful candidates for seats under 15 per cent All India Quota and 100 per cent including 85 per cent state quota seats of Central Institutions (ABVIMS and RML Hospital/VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital/ESIC)/ Central Universities (including DU/BHU /AMU)/ AIIMS/ JIPMER and Deemed Universities, will be conducted by the MCC/ DGHS for Undergraduate Medical / Dental Courses. MCC only does the registration for AFMC and forwards the data of registered Candidates to AFMC authorities for the admission process. DU/BHU and other universities may use the score for any other relevant courses being offered by them

NBEMS has announced a change in the exam format of National Eligibility Entrance Test, Postgraduate (NEET PG) 2024. NBEMS has decided to introduce mandatory time-bound sections.

The overall difficulty level of the exam was rated moderate to difficult by experts. "While physics and Chemistry were a bit lengthy and moderate to difficult, Biology was easy compared to the other two subjects. However, the CISCE students will be able to appear in the improvement exams for a maximum of two subjects from 2024 onwards. They need to shell out Rs 1,500 per subject for re-evaluation. Note, that the amount will be non-refundable.

As per the official announcement, CISCE will announce the Class 10, 12 board results on May 6 at 11 am. As soon as the result is declared, students will be able to access it from the official website – cisce.org or results.cisce.org.

The paper will have four sections-- Physics, Chemistry, Zoology and Botany. Each section will be further divided into two parts-- A and B. While many experts will release the unofficial answer keys immediately after the exam concludes, NTA will release the official answer keys after a few days. Once released, the answer keys will be available at the official website -- exams.nta.ac.in/NEET/.

Passing NEET UG grants eligibility for medical education in approved Indian institutions.

NEET UG 2024 candidates are instructed to follow the following dress code while appearing for the medical entrance test

– Heavy clothes and long sleeves are not permitted

– Shoes are not permitted. Slippers and sandals with low heels are permitted

The candidates wearing articles or objects of faith – customary, cultural or religious should report at the examination centre by 12:30 pm so that there is enough time for proper frisking without any inconvenience to the candidate while maintaining the sanctity of the examination, said National Testing Agency

The reporting time at the NEET 2024 exam center is 11:30 am and the last entry into the exam hall would be 1:30 pm. Post this, the candidates will not be allowed entry inside the exam center.

The principles of mechanics, which form the basis of physics, include gravitation, the motion of rigid bodies and particle systems, and work, energy, and power. Ensure that you learn these fundamentals well.

Electrostatic potential, electric current, electric charges and fields, magnetic effects of current and magnetism, and electromagnetic induction are all covered in this section. Since these are tested often, pay close attention to concepts like Coulomb’s law, Ampere’s law, and Faraday’s law.

a) Personal transparent water bottle.
b) Additional photograph same as uploaded on Application Form, to be pasted on Attendance Sheet
c) Admit Card along with Self Declaration (Undertaking) having Postcard size photograph affixed on the designated space (page 2) downloaded from the NTA website (a clear printout on A4 size paper) duly filled in.

Plant Physiology: Consists of photosynthesis and its various stages, respiration and its types and plant hormones and their functions.
Genetics: It includes basic principles of genetics, including concepts like DNA replication, transcription and translation.
Ecology: Discuss the composition and roles of ecosystems as well as biodiversity and its preservation
Division and Cell Biology:  Understand the meiosis, mitosis and cell cycle. Learn about the composition and roles of cell organelles as well as the ideas of cell signalling and division.
Plant Anatomy: Examine the tissues and organs that make up a plant’s inside. Recognise the roles played by the various plant cell types and concentrate on how plants have adapted to their distinct environments.
Plant Diversity: Classify plants based on their characteristics and evolutionary relationships and Understand the life cycles of different plant groups, including algae, bryophytes, and pteridophytes.
Plant Reproduction and Morphology
Recognise the several ways that plants reproduce, including asexual and sexual. Examine the structure and morphology of various plant sections, paying particular attention to pollination processes.

1. General Organic Chemistry forms a base for the subject in Class 11 in which you will get an insight about the basic terminologies and concepts to be used in the subject. Concept of aromaticity and resonance is exhaustively used in the subject.

2. Hydrocarbons include the study of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzenoids. A basic understanding of IUPAC naming, isomerism and reaction of hydrocarbons sets a strong foundation for the more complex reactions.

2. Revised application fees: A revision has been made to the application fee structure. The general category registration cost has been raised to Rs 1,700. Previously, candidates who weren’t from India had to pay Rs 9,500. The new cost is Rs 1,600 for applicants in the EWS/OBC-NCL categories and Rs 1,000 for those in the SC/ST/PwD categories.

3. Revision of tie-breaking policy: The rule about tying has been updated. When deciding who gets the highest grade among candidates, the age and NEET UG application number are no longer taken into account. Priority is awarded according to scores got in biology, chemistry, and physics, in that order. If necessary, the ratio of right to wrong answers is then considered both between disciplines and within specific courses.

Starting the NEET UG question paper with biology is statistically wise, as questions in this domain are typically less intricate and require less time than physics and chemistry. Begin with rote memorisation-based and formulaic questions to maintain mental clarity for more challenging ones. A maximum of 60 minutes should be allocated to biology in the final exam.

"I did not take any stress at all during my preparation. I made sure to give my best in preparation and not think of the result. Taking stress won’t help and there is life beyond my exam. I knew that my parents, teachers and mentors would support me." said Yashvi Garg, who bagged all-India rank 128 in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2023 by scoring 705 marks out of 720. She is pursuing her MBBS from ABVIMS and Dr RML Hospital, New Delhi.

The spirit of never giving up and determination is important, but another thing that a lot of us forget these days is that a little bit of stress, anxiety, and fear is normal and it is important to succeed.
