NEET UG 2023: The National Medical Commission (NMC) in the newly issued guidelines has revised the process for determining ranks of aspirants having an identical National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG score. As per the notification, marks scored in Physics will be prioritised, followed by Chemistry and Biology. This is unlike the current practice of giving priority to marks obtained in Biology, followed by Chemistry and then Physics.

As per the Graduate Medical Education Regulation notification issued on June 8, the NMC stated, “Break of tie-in marks at NEET UG– In case of tie-in marks of the students appearing for NEET-UG, the respective marks obtained in Physics followed by Chemistry and further followed by Biology in the NEET UG shall be considered. Provided if the tie were to continue, then draw of lots by using the computer, with no human intervention, the eligible candidates shall be selected.”

NMC also released a clarification for students whose results were declared this year. It read, “previous procedures/ rules (as per the information bulletin published by the NTA) shall be followed for deciding “the inter-se-merit of candidates for tie-breaking” in NEET UG 2023 result.”

The new regulations are likely to be implemented from next year, reported PTI.

The existing tie-breaking rules is in the following order:

— Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Biology (Botany and Zoology) in the test, followed by,
— Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Chemistry in the test, followed by
— Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Physics in the test, followed by,
— Candidate with less proportion of the number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in all the subjects in the test,
— Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Biology (Botany and Zoology) in the test, followed by
— Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Chemistry in the test, followed by
— Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Physics in the test, followed by

The new regulations for tie-breaking will not impact the rankings released this year. The NEET UG 2023 results were declared on June 13.
