Islamia Medical Institute: Trinamool Congress factions clash over governing body election

Two TMC factions clashed over the governing body election of Islamia Medical Institute at Park Circus on Sunday.

Infighting broke out between two factions of Trinamool Congress over the governing body election of Islamia Medical Institute at Park Circus on Sunday. The clash broke out between followers of Trinamool councillor Iqbal Ahmed and minister Javed Khan, both of whom are contesting in the governing body election. Khan’s supporters alleged that followers of Ahmed were manipulating the election. To air their protest, Khan’s followers boycotted the election, after which an altercation took place between the two factions.

Police officials and RAF were deployed to bring the situation under control, and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob. Ten persons were injured in the scuffle, while 12 others were detained. Khan’s followers alleged their party office was ransacked by Ahmed’s supporters, and their members were beaten up.

Brushing aside the allegations, Ahmed told reporters: “Khan’s followers never took part in such elections. Now they have started doing it, and in the process, are creating trouble here. Some of his followers did not have required papers with them.”

Khan, on the other hand, said: “We will always abide by law, and not indulge in unlawful activities. We were only following the law. They did not like that. Their candidate was made presiding officer for the election. Can a candidate be made the presiding officer in any election? We had given their candidate a note of dissent.”
