IIT-Mandi 11th Convocation: Number of female students increase; 565 degrees distributed

This year, a total of 52 female students in undergraduate programme; 66 in postgraduate and masters’ programmes, 14 in PhD programme have graduated from IIT Mandi surpassing the numbers from the previous years.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi today celebrated its 11th convocation ceremony, with a graduating class of 565 students (426 men and 139 women), and 60 PhDs.

As per the data accessed by indianexpress.com, IIT Mandi has seen a rise in the number of women students passing out in different streams. This year, a total of 52 girls in undergraduate programme; 66 in postgraduate and masters’ programmes, 14 in PhD programme have graduated from IIT Mandi surpassing the numbers from the previous years.

According to the data, the number of female students graduating this year are less than boys in every stream, except for MA where 7 male and 8 female students are graduating. In BTech, the gap is huge as 59 female students are graduating in comparison to 185 male students.

For PhD programmes, 43 male are graduating in comparison to 14 female students, 18 in MTech in comparison to 94 male students, 38 female students are graduating in MSc programmes in comparison to 86 male students.

The number of female students is zero in I-PhD and dual degree students, and only two female students are graduating in MS programmes.

This year, a total of 112 MTech degrees are being awarded:

A total of 125 MSc degrees are being awarded, out of which 44 are from Applied Mathematics, 45 from Chemistry and 35 from Physics. Similarly, 244 BTech degrees have been awarded.

Additionally, Aditya Sarkar from the BTech Electrical Engineering (2023 batch) is being awarded with the President of India gold medal, Pritish Chugh from the same batch has bagged the Director’s gold medal, and Sudhanshu Gangawar from MTech Mechanical Engineering with Specialization in Energy Systems has been awarded with the Institute’s gold medal award.

“In the academic year 2022-2023, IIT-Mandi has published more than 400 journal papers and received 83 projects with a total grant of Rs 21.28 crore. Along with this, IIT Mandi is currently carrying out 158 research projects worth Rs 87 crore. With this, In the next five years, we have planned to increase the faculty strength to 350+ from the current 187, and the student strength to over 5000 from the current 2800 (approx). In the coming years, the institute’s focus will be to encourage faculty members and research scholars to publish impactful research works that are at par with the best universities across the world to solve real-life problems that will impact the lives of the people around us,” Prof Laxmidhar Behera, Director, IIT Mandi said.
