Ocean Engineering deals with the design and operation of man-made structures in the Ocean and other marine bodies. The Department of Ocean Engineering offers a BTech in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering with an option to pursue a Dual Degree in either Ocean Engineering or Applied Mechanics.
On completion of the course at IIT Madras, students have the option to take up a job or higher studies either as a Naval Architect or Ocean Engineer, among others. The jobs in the field of Ocean Engineering are mainly Coastal Engineers and Offshore Engineers. Some of the companies that usually recruit graduates in this field are Schlumberger, Reliance Offshore, Shell, and Vedam.
