IIT Kanpur scholarships: The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) provides scholarships to worthy and deserving students every year. While some are in the form of college fee concessions, others come as direct benefit transfers to the students’ bank accounts.
IIT Kanpur provides merit-cum-means scholarships, INSPIRE scholarships, donor scholarships to the students in their undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
IIT Kanpur: List of scholarships
1. Merit cum Means Scholarship: Students receive a full tuition waiver and a pocket allowance of Rs 1,000 per month for the duration of the programme. The recipients must maintain a minimum CPI of 6.5. However, if CPI falls below 6.5 (but remains above 6.0) then pocket allowance is withdrawn. A student must only submit their parental income certificate to apply for this scholarship. This scholarship can be availed by those who are other than category (SC/ST) students with annual parental income of less than Rs 4,50,000.
2. INSPIRE Scholarship: Students receive an annual scholarship of Rs 30,000 per semester (Rs 60,000 annually), along with a research grant of Rs 20,000. Students of BS programmes within the ALL INDIA RANK (AIR) 10,000 as per Common Merit LIST (CML) in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics departments are eligible for this scholarship. Students must submit an undertaking for not getting any other scholarship to the SSPC every semester to apply for this scholarship. This is a merit-based scholarship; hence, the recipients must maintain a minimum CPI of 6.0.
3. Donor Scholarships: IIT Kanpur gives Donor Scholarships to meritorious and needy students. The details of the various Donor Scholarships available for students.
– A student should have a CPI ≥ 6.0 and Total Family Annual Income (TFAI) < (TFAI_norm). The TFAI_norm is 6.0 lacs currently. After the first round of Donor Scholarships has been decided, the means criteria may be relaxed to (1.5*TFAI_norm). If there are donor scholarships still un-awarded, the following criteria may be used in awarding more donor scholarships.
– It is meant for students of a particular year in a specific department(s), and may be opened for other students in the following order:
(i) students across all years within the same department(s)
(ii) students of the particular year across all departments
(iii) students across all years across all departments.
– It is meant for students of all years in a specific department and may be opened for other students across all years across all departments.
– If a donor scholarship goes un-awarded in an academic year, the scholarship amount available in the next academic year is double of the original amount. Therefore, this scholarship may be awarded in the next academic year to two students, if available, using prevailing guidelines.
– The modifications above shall be applied subject to approval from the donor(s). Please note that the above criteria/conditions are referred to as MCM-Donor criteria in the table below.
4. Free-Basic-Mess Scholarship: This scholarship can be availed by those who are category (SC/ST) students with annual parental income less than Rs 4,50,000. Under this, students receive a free basic mess bill and a pocket allowance.
5. External Scholarship: The Institute helps its students in applying for various external scholarships. This provides information about some external scholarships that IIT Kanpur students have applied for or availed of in the past; however, the list provided below is not complete and there may be other external scholarships for which you may be eligible/ interested. As part of the Prime Minister’s Digital India program, the Government of India (GoI) has created the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) for students across the country for detailed information about various GoI scholarships.
6. Sports Scholarship: A maximum of 20 scholarships per year of Rs 1,000 per month for 9 months are to be given to IIT Kanpur students who show, Leadership in sports-related activities on campus leading to development, growth, and increased participation in various sporting activities. Excellence in sports, as shown by performance in Inter-IIT and other external sports meets.
