GATE 2024: Important dates, eligibility, exam pattern, syllabus — all FAQs answered

GATE 2024: Registration for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) will begin at the official website gate2024.iisc.ac.in on August 30. Every year, nearly 7-10 lakh candidates apply for the entrance test.

GATE is conducted on a rational basis by the seven first generation Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore. This year, it is being conducted by IISc Bangalore.

GATE 2024 will be conducted by the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore.

When will GATE 2024 be held?

GATE 2024 will be held on February 3, 4, 10 and 11, 2024. The exam will be held in two shifts on each day— 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. IISc Bangalore is yet to announce which test paper will be held on which day.

Has any new subject been added for GATE 2024?

A new paper on Data Science and Artificial Intelligence has been added to GATE 2024.

What are the important dates for GATE 2024

The application process will commence on August 24 and conclude September 29 (without late fees). Candidates can register from September 30 till October 13 by paying late fees.

Applicants can make changes to their form from November 7 to 11 and the admit cards will be available for download from January 3, 2024. The exam will be conducted on February 3, 4, 10 and 11, 2024.

The candidates’ response will be available on the portal from February 16. The answer keys will be available from February 21 and challenges can be raised from February 22 to 25, 2024. The GATE 2024 results will be announced on March 16, 2024 and score cards will be available from March 23, 2024.

What are the documents required for application?

The candidates need to fill in their personal details such as— name, date of birth, personal mobile number, parents’ name, and more. They will need a valid photo ID which has to be produced in original while appearing for the exam at the centre.

The scorecard will have the same name as the application form. Candidates need to provide an address for communication, eligibility degree details, GATE paper(s) and their codes and three choices of GATE exam cities from the same zone. The fees has to be paid through online mode.

What is the application fee for GATE 2024

The application fee for GATE 2024 from August 24 to September 29 is— Rs 900 per paper for female candidates, SC, ST and PwD candidates and Rs 1800 per paper for all remaining candidates including foreign nationals.

For candidates applying between September 30 to October 13, the application fee is Rs 1,400 per paper for female candidates, SC, ST and PwD candidates and Rs 2300 per paper for all remaining candidates including foreign nationals.

What is the eligibility criteria for GATE 2024?

Candidates who are currently in their third or higher years of any undergraduate degree programme or have completed any government approved degree programme in Engineering, Technology, Science, Architecture or Humanities are eligible to appear for GATE 2-24.

Candidates who have completed their graduation or are pursuing their qualifying degree from other countries must be in their third or higher years or must have completed their bachelor’s degree of at least three years duration in Engineering, Technology, Science, Architecture or Humanities.

What are the opportunities through GATE?

GATE is a national-level examination that assesses candidates for comprehensive understanding in various undergraduate-level subjects in Engineering, Technology, Science, Architecture and Humanities for admission to various master’s and doctoral programmes and recruitment by some Public Sector Undertakings.

How many exam cities are there for GATE 2024?

There a total of 226 cities with 36 cities under IISc Bangalore zone, 37 cities under IIT Bombay zone, 19 cities under IIT Delhi zone, 24 cities under IIT Guwahati zone, 14 cities under IIT Kanpur zone, 30 cities under IIT Kharagpur zone, 43 cities under IIT Madras zone and 23 cities under IIT Roorkee zone.

Has the syllabus for GATE 2024 released?

Yes, the papers and syllabus for GATE 2024 has been released by IISc Bangalore. There will be 30 papers out of which, students can choose up to two papers. The exam will be conducted in English and each paper will be for 100 marks. Out of the total marks, General Aptitude (GA) will be common for all papers, it would be for 15 marks. The rest of the paper will be for 85 marks.

Candidates will be assigned to appear only in one of the sessions for papers being conducted in multiple sessions. The paper code will be required both during application and examination. Each candidate shall fill only one application form, in case of multiple applications, only one will be accepted and the remaining will be rejected without any refund for the paid fee.

For Engineering Sciences (XE) paper sections there will be compulsory 15 marks for Engineering Mathematics, and 70 marks for any two optional subjects from— Fluid Mechanics, Materials Science, Solid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Polymer Science and Engineering

For Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) paper sections there will be compulsory reasoning and comprehension for 25 marks and 60 marks for any two optional subjects from— Economics, English, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology.

And, for Life Sciences (XL) paper sections, there will be compulsory Chemistry paper for 25 marks and 60 marks for two optional papers from— Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology and Food technology.
