A female teacher of a private school was arrested Wednesday for allegedly beating up a four-year-old girl studying in the pre-primary section of the institute in Surat city, said police.
The teacher, Jashodaben Khokharia, was arrested and charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and also relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, said Assistant Commissioner of Police Vipul Patel.
“Based on a complaint given by the girl’s parents, we have arrested the teacher Jashodaben,” said Patel.
The incident took place on October 9 afternoon at Sadhna Niketan School in Punagam area where the senior kindergarten student was repeatedly beaten up on her back and slapped with bare hands after she did not do her homework. It came to light after the girl reached home and her mother spotted red swollen patches on her back while changing her clothes. The girl shared the ordeal with her mother.
The next day, the girl’s father reached the school to complain about the incident to the school principal. CCTV footage from the classroom showed Khokharia sitting near the child and slapping her on her back and on the face for nearly 30 times. The girl’s father later lodged a complaint at the Kapodra police station.
“We visited the school on Tuesday and asked the principal to show us CCTV footage of her classroom. The footage clearly shows how mercilessly my daughter was thrashed by the teacher in front of other students. We want authorities to give us justice,” an angry father of the girl told PTI.
The authorities of the self-financed school have informed they have accepted the resignation of the accused teacher.
“I visited the school and have checked the CCTV footage and found that the incident was genuine. We have also taken statements from the accused teacher, school principal and others. After our primary investigations it was found that the teacher was found guilty of mercilessly beating the student,” said Surat District Education Officer Deepak Darjee.
Meanwhile, state Education Minister Praful Panseriya took note of the incident after the assault video went viral on social media. “The people responsible for such an incident will not be let off and they will be strictly punished,” the minister told The Indian Express. He also appealed to the people that similar incidents should be immediately reported to the District Education Officer if reported in any part of the state.
