A case of accidental death has been registered in the matter. Mittalba Zala, a police sub-inspector who is investigating the case said that Vala had attempted suicide around a month ago too. A man died, allegedly by suicide, after his wife locked him up inside their house and dialled up a police helpline following a fight in the Raiya village area of Rajkot city on Wednesday night, officials said, adding that he had attempted suicide a month ago too.
The incident took place between 8 and 9 pm, as per officials. Hasmukh Vala, a mason who was in his 40s, was found hanging by a dupatta from the ceiling of his room. Vala was found dead minutes after his wife Kamla dialled 181 Abhayam helpline for women, as per officials.
Police said that the Abhayam helpline forwarded the complaint to the control room of Rajkot city police station, which in turn alerted the University police station. By the time a team of police personnel reached the couple’s home, the man was found dead.
“The couple had a quarrel on Wednesday and the man had started thrashing the woman. Therefore, the woman first called his son who was away for work. The son advised her to lock his father inside the room. Accordingly, the woman locked the man inside the room, went to a nearby temple and dialled police for help. Our team met her at the temple and from there she guided our team to her home. However, when our team reached their home, they found Vala hanging in his room,” police inspector BP Rojiya, in charge of the University police station, told The Indian Express. Rojiya said that a forensic post-mortem on Vala also “prima facie” revealed death due to hanging as the primary cause of death. “Primary investigation has revealed that Vala had a habit of drinking also. But we are awaiting results of forensic analysis of his viscera samples to ascertain if he was drunk on Wednesday,” said the official.
A case of accidental death has been registered in the matter. Mittalba Zala, a police sub-inspector who is investigating the case said that Vala had attempted suicide around a month ago too. “The couple used to quarrel frequently and therefore, the woman had returned to her parents’ home. During that time, the man had consumed poison and attempted suicide around a month ago. However, he had survived the bid at that time,” said Zala.
