Man killed over distribution of gifts: Garba organiser among 4 sent to 3-day police remand
The police said that Bokhiriya runs a store of aluminium items, Kuchhadiya is a railway contractor, Keshwala is a real-estate developer and Gorasiya is a close relative of Kuchhadiya.

Two days after they allegedly beat a man to death over a dispute about gifts to the latter’s daughter during a garba event in Porbandar city, the event organiser and his supporters — arrested for murder — were sent to three-day police custody by a local court Thursday.
Porbandar residents Raja Kuchhadiya, Raju Keshwala, Ramde Bokhiriya and Pratik Goraniya were arrested by Udhyogngar police on Wednesday, a day after they and three others allegedly beat Sarman Odedra to death around 2 am on Tuesday.
Police said that Bokhiriya was the main organiser of a traditional street garba event at Garbi Chowk while Kuchhadiya was a co-organiser. Odedra’s 11-year-daughter had participated in the garba event during the Navratri festival.
At the end of the nine-day long festival on Monday, the girl complained to her mother Mali Odedra that the organisers had given her one gift less. The police said that when the mother went to the garba venue, Keshwala told her that there was no discrimination in gift distribution and if she wanted the gift, she could collect it or leave. A verbal duel ensued and the accused allegedly threatened her that she should leave or they will kill her.
The police said the mother returned to her residence near the chowk around 1 am on Tuesday. According to the FIR lodged on the basis of her complaint, the four men and two-three unidentified persons came to their residence on bikes and started abusing, kicking and attacking Odedra with wooden sticks. The accused then allegedly took Odedra to the Garbi Chowk and beat him again.
After the police were alerted about the assault, Odedra was rushed a government hospital where he died during treatment.
The police said that Bokhiriya runs a store of aluminium items, Kuchhadiya is a railway contractor, Keshwala is a real-estate developer and Gorasiya is a close relative of Kuchhadiya.
Sub-Inspector Mayursinh Solanki, in charge of Udyognagar police station, said: “Investigation so far has revealed that there was no animosity between the victim and the accused and the dispute over the distribution of gift seems to be the trigger. The accused are also claiming that their intention was not to kill Odedra but some foul language was used by Odedra and his wife and they reacted.”
Solanki, the investigating officer of the case, said that while the Odedras have faced cases for selling liquor in the past, Bokhiriya has once been booked for consuming liquor. “Postmortem examination revealed that Sarman died due to injuries to his lungs and kidney,” he added.
Solanki said that two more persons — Manish Odedra and Hardik Hirve — have been detained in connection with the case. Solanki said Manish Odedra works as a driver while Hirve is a labourer.
