The family of Sarika Anand Kamble,26,who lost two of her limbs after falling from a local train at Begdewadi railway station on May 6,suspects that the mishap was the fallout of a chain-snatching incident as two gold chains worn by her were missing afterwards. Kamble is undergoing treatment at Sassoon Hospital now.
Doctors said she was out of danger, but her right hand and right leg had to be amputated. A resident of Ghorwadi in Talegaon,Kamble was going to her maternal home in Khadki on May 6. The railway police said Kamble and her brother Rakesh Gaikwad (22) had boarded the local train at Gorwadi railway station along with her three daughters Shreya (5),Riya (4),Jiya (one-and-a-half years) and her niece Shruti (5) around 12.30 pm. We have registered a case of accident. We suspect that Sarikas grip on a metal rod in the compartment she was holding on to might have loosened. We are yet to record her statement, said assistant sub inspector Gosavi of GRP,Pune railway station.
Her family members said Kamble was holding Jiya in her hands when she experienced a jerk on her neck, following which she fell down from the moving train. Jiya also fell down, but suffered only minor injuries. Rakesh said,I lifted Sarika in my hands and brought her to the platform. I shouted for help, but nobody came forward. A boy helped me in arranging the ambulance. We then took her to the Dehu Road Cantonment Hospital, and later shifted her to Sassoon Hospital. Her gold chains were missing. I feel that someone had snatched her chain, following which she lost balance and fell down.
At the hospital,Kamble also said that she did feel some jerk on her neck. I felt something on my neck as if someone was trying to hit me… But before I could understand anything,I fell down. She said she was too shocked to say anything after losing her limbs.
The family is yet to lodge a chain-snatching complaint. We were disturbed and did not know what to do after learning about the mishap. Our first priority was to ensure proper medical treatment to Sarika. We could save her,but her limbs were lost. It was a nightmare. We have three small daughters, said Anand Kamble (36),Sarikas husband who works as an electrician in a private company on Senapati Bapat Road on contact basis.
I was on duty when the incident took place. I dont know what caused the mishap, but the possibility of chain-snatching cannot be ruled out as her gold chains including the mangalsutra were missing. The railway police had come for recording the statement, but her situation was bad. Police said they would record our statement later. They should probe the chain-snatching angle. It should not happen with anyone else, he said.
