The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Geneva is organising a workshop to strengthen cooperation and facilitate information sharing between climate prediction centres and research centres across the world at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM). ‘The First WMO Workshop on Operational Climate Prediction’ would be held at IITM from November 9 to 11.
According to IITM, the workshop is an effort to facilitate increased interaction among various operational climate prediction centres and associated research communities leading to better collective capability to meet the climate information needs of decision-makers.
“It is the first in a series of periodic workshops for ensuring sustained and regular interactions among the concerned communities,” said officials.
The workshop would identify priorities for strengthening cooperation and enhanced exchange of data, methods and tools between Global Producing Centres of Long Range Forecasts (GPCs) and Regional Climate Centres (RCCs), and to develop recommendations aimed at improving operational practice in long-range forecasting, including support of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) and Regional Climate Outlook Forums (RCOFs).
Prof Sulochana Gadgil, eminent scientist and ex-professor from IISc, Bengaluru will be the Chief Guest. Dr Rupa Kumar Kolli (Officer-in-Charge, World Climate Applications and Services Division, Climate Prediction and Adaptation Branch, Climate and Water Department WMO), Dr M. ajeevan (Director, IITM) and Dr B Mukhopadhyay (DDGM-Climatology, IMD) will also be present during the event.
