Poor rainfall so far this year has forced the civic administration to consider a water cut for the second year in a row. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is all set to introduce a cut of up to 30 per cent to start with.
The water in the dams- Khadakwasla,Panshet and Varasgaon- is very less due to the poor rainfall in the catchment area. The irrigation department has informed us on the less availability of water, said V G Kulkarni,PMC Development Engineer. The water cut move is thus to ensure that water available in the dams can be used for a much longer period in the further absence of rain.
It is likely that the civic administration will implement the previous years measure of supplying water on alternate days, said Kulkarni, adding that a meeting with the irrigation department would be held this week to take a decision on further water cuts.
The water level in the dams is reducing and we have 1.30 TMC water in dams. The available water can only fulfill the need till July 31 if there is no rainfall, Kulkarni said.
He added that the PMC is constantly monitoring the situation. We have started planning for water management in case of poor rainfall, he said.
Last year, the delayed monsoon had hit the water supply in the city and the civic body faced difficulty in ensuring a proper supply to citizens. The PMC administration had to supply water on alternate days and issue an advisory on avoiding the misuse of water.
It had directed citizens to not to use drinking water for gardening and washing vehicles even as it encouraged many to take up rain water harvesting. In order to use the ground water, the PMC dug borewell across the city to provide water to locals.
The civic body already has its plan in place and will use the borewells dug last year for meeting the water demands, Kulkarni said.
