Pune is all set for a brighter and safer Diwali this year as Ganesh Gaikwad, the city’s veteran akash kandil (a decorative hanging lantern, traditionally used during the Hindu festival of Diwali) manufacturer, introduces a unique waterproof akash kandil concept. Gaikwad, who has been in the business for over 20 years, runs his manufacturing unit under the name Abhidnya Arts in Katraj, while his retail outlet operates from Raviwar Peth. Unlike conventional akash kandils, which are often susceptible to damage from rain or moisture, these new kandils are designed to withstand water without compromising on their aesthetic appeal. “Even if you immerse these kandils completely in water, they remain intact. The rings and joints are specially waterproofed while delicate decorative elements like lace are applied in a way that maintains their durability,” Gaikwad explained. Abhidnya Arts’ new waterproof line is not just functional but also visually appealing. Crafted from a combination of handmade and fluorescent paper, fabric, and molding for photo-frame sections, the kandils feature intricate embroidery and materials sourced from Surat. The manufacturing process is entirely handmade, ensuring that every akash kandil has the charm of traditional craftsmanship. Over the years, Abhidnya Arts has become renowned for its wide variety of akash kandils, including Rajwada patterns, jumbo sizes, hexagonal designs, and photo-frame kandils. The workshop also produces kandils featuring the names of iconic figures like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Ganesh Ji, Mahakal, Gurudev Datt, and Vitthal, reflecting Pune’s rich cultural heritage. “The idea for waterproof akash kandils came from the challenges posed by the rainy season. It took nearly five months of experimentation and proofing to perfect the design, sourcing materials, and ensuring durability. The response so far has been extremely positive,” Gaikwad said. Abhidnya Arts employs over 20 in-house women workers and collaborates with 100-150 additional workers externally. The kandils are not only eco-friendly and recyclable but are also designed to last for several years, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional single-use decorative items.
