The state election office recently declared that only eligible citizens registered with the Election Commission till July 1 will be able to vote for the forthcoming civic polls. However, 36.43 lakh voters of Pune civic body will be able to know only by November 6 whether they will be able to exercise their right to vote and by December 10 about the polling booth to cast their vote.

In an official notification issued by the State Election Commission, all the 29 municipal corporations, including the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), have been asked to prepare the final electoral rolls for the forthcoming civic polls.

“The polling booth-wise electoral roll has to be published by December 10 while the ward wise electoral roll has to be declared by November 28,” said Suresh Kakani, secretary of State Election Commission.

The electoral roll is prepared for each of the state Assembly constituencies by the Election Commission of India (ECI) through its process of revision undertaken frequently. The same electoral roll is used for civic polls based on the deadline set for it.

PMC additional municipal commissioner Omkar Divate said, “The State Election Commission has set a deadline of July 1 for considering the available electoral roll with EC for civic polls. This means it has already declared that those featuring in the electoral roll till July 1 this year will only be able to cast their vote for civic polls.”

The draft electoral roll for PMC elections will have to be published by November 6 so that the citizens can file their suggestion or objections on it till November 14. The officer concerned will take a decision on the public opinion and declare the ward-wise electoral roll by November 28. The citizens can file their application if there is a clerical mistake, name is shifted by mistakenly to another electoral ward and if the name features in the electoral roll of July 1 procured from ECI but not in electoral roll of wards.

The state government has decided to hold a multi-member ward election for civic polls with four members in each electoral ward. There will be 165 corporators to be elected from 41 wards in PMC with four each from 40 wards, and five from one ward for which the delimitation process was conducted recently.
