University of Pune’s (UoP) decision to filter external admissions for post-gradudate (PG) courses has not gone down well with many educational forums and students unions.

Describing the decision in ‘contravention’ of the Maharashtra Universities Act,1994,these organisations have appealed to varsity to reconsider the decision.

“By filtering PG admissions for external courses, university is clearly denying educational opportunities to many. Every year,PG courses form major chunk of external admissions. It is unjust on the part of the university to deny admissions to regular students keen to enroll for external PG courses,” said Dhananjay Kulkarni of Vidyarthi Vikas Manch.

He said the university was bound to share with stakeholders its decision to filter PG external admissions at least six months in advance as per the Maharashtra Universities Act,1994. “There are several students who have completed regular undergraduate courses and are eagerly waiting for external admissions to start,” he said.

Student union Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) said that UoP’s decision to screen PG external admission would hamper the prospects of students who want to pursue higher studies while doing jobs.

“Pune is an attractive job market and youngsters from across the state and other states settle here to find jobs after their graduation. Most of them prefer to enroll for external courses. UoP’s decision will hit these students hard,” said ABVP’s Vivekananda Ujlambkar.

Educational forums and students unions have demanded that UoP restore its external admission system.
