Two new garbage processing sites for Pune

A senior government officer said the two sites of 25 acres each have been approved and is awaiting formal sanctions. “Some paper work is left. These two sites are at the two ends of the city and would help in processing the garbage generated in the city. Even as the present sites are going to increase the capacity of garbage processing,it was necessary to have alternate sites,” officials said.

Both the sites are government land and the PMC will have to be acquired them from the government for Rs 2.63 crore.

Meanwhile,a third site too is in the final stages of approval. The official did not want to reveal the name of the third site. “These two sites have been approved and after paying up the government,garbage processing units could be installed. There will not be any more dumping sites in the city,” said the officer.

A present,the Hanjir processing plant at the existing site takes on nearly 1,000 metric tonnes while the Hadapsar industrial unit as well the Ramtekdi units take on 100 metric tonnes each. The biogas plants in each of the wards take on another 50 metric tonnes. “Additional sites with garbage processing plants will always help us as back-up if there is any technical failure with any of the machines at other plants,” said a PMC officer.

Meanwhile,a day after the protest by villagers of Uruli Devachi and Phursungi ended,the civic administration has proposed to sanction funds to the state government for acquiring land at Vadhu Khurd and Tulapur for renewal energy generation project. The strike called by the villagers ended on Friday after a long discussion with the district collector and civic officials. The villagers were also assured of a drinking water supply scheme to ensure that they recieve good quality water. The open dumping of waste will also end by May 31.
