Two undertrial inmates at the Yerawada Central Prison were severely injured after being attacked by six other prisoners near a barrack in the prison premises, as a fallout of past rivalry, said the Pune Police.

The injured undertrial inmates were identified as Hariram Ganesh Panchal and Musa Abu Shaikh — both being prosecuted for severe body and property offences — said police.

The incident took place next to a water tank near barrack no. 2 of the Yerawada Central Prison at 9.45 am on March 31, when the two undertrial inmates were attacked by six undertrials, who used plastic buckets and kitchen ladles to injure the duo.

Primary investigation suggests that both the sides had been nursing grudges for a long time, due to past rivalry.

The two injured and the six suspects face charges under severe body and property offences.

The suspects have been booked for unlawful assembly and voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous means under relevant Indian Penal Code sections, said police.
