Toddler swallows fish, emergency procedures save him in Pune

The baby was visibly distressed and his oxygen saturation levels were dropping dangerously.

What looked like a case of a baby choking on a piece of cooked food or fish, shocked doctors when they noticed a fish tail in the pharynx of an year-old toddler.

Dr Ravi Pratap, Consultant Emergency Medicine, Columbia Asia Hospital, Kharadi, in a release issued Thursday said that the parents informed the doctors that they were rubbing a live fish on the baby’s lips as a treatment suggested for his constant drooling. The fish accidently slipped into his mouth. The father’s repeated attempts to extract it with his finger failed and caused panic.

The baby was visibly distressed and his oxygen saturation levels were dropping dangerously. During attempts to extract the fish, there was also a sudden drop in the heart rate of the baby, indicating an impending cardiac arrest.

“With his condition getting worse each passing minute and his heart rate dropping, Heimlich manoeuvre (abdominal thrust) was applied four times. The tail of the fish was visible in the oropharynx, but an attempt to remove it with an artery forceps failed. The child was then sedated and the fish was removed from the airway with the help of a sponge holder under direct laryngoscopy. BMV ventilation (manual resuscitation) was given to the child for a few minutes, and to our collective relief, he was then normal again,” Dr Pratap said.

Dr Pratap pointed out, “In my practice, I have never come across such a case. Experts at the hospital warned people against following non-medical practices and listening to quacks in treating medical conditions.
