Three from city make it to Amsterdam Olympiad

Three students from the city will represent India at the Amsterdam International Mathematical Olympiad

Three students from the city will represent India at the Amsterdam International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Indraneel G Kasmalkar,Mrudul M Thatte and Prafulla S Dhariwal of the city, all of them from Maharashtra, had to give a tough fight to more than 25,000 students across the country to get enter the final-six list to represent India at the 52nd IMO,from July 16 to July 24. The six names were announced on Friday. The other three,Debdyuti Banerjee,Akashdeep Dey and Akashnil Dutta are from West Bengal.

“The first phase of the competition had 25,000 students from 22 regions. Level-II had 1,500 students shortlisted for the National Mathematical Olympiad (NMO). From these 1,500 students,60 were selected and given training,” said Aditi Phadke,Regional Mathematical Olympiad Co ordinator,(Maharashtra and Goa Region),Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana,Pune.

Indraneel, who had attempted the prestigious exam twice earlier,is excited. “I have been preparing since I was in Std IX. After appearing for the exam twice earlier,I had little hope of getting selected this year. Finally,I did make it to the final. Hopefully,I will win a medal at IMO,” says Indraneel, who had earlier penned a Maths fiction titled Wizards of Bernum,A Mathematical Adventure of Two Heroes. He says Mathematics for him is more of a hobby than a subject. “Now that my Std XII results are out,in which I have scored 88 per cent,my focus will be on IMO,” says the student of Abbasaheb Garware College, who is heading for the US for undergraduate studies in Maths at the prestigious University of California,Berkeley.

Prafulla confesses he took the examination very seriously. In fact,he stood first amongst the 1,500 in the second phase of the competition. A student of Dr Shamarao Kalmadi High School,in 2009,he had won a gold medal at the International Astronomy Olympiad in China. “At the IMO training camp in Mumbai,I thought I would find combinatromics difficult but fortunately it was easy. Now that IMO is just a month away,I intend to solve all shortlisted problems of the last 5-10 years,” adds Prafulla.

A student of Gyan Prabodhini Prashala,Mrudul cleared the regional olympiad and then the Indian National Mathemmatical Olympiad when she was in Std IX. Last year she was invited to the IMO training camp,Mumbai, but unfortunately she did not get selected. “Prior to the camp I solved shortlisted problems from 2005 to 2010. For the final competition,I will devote 10-12 hours to problem solving every day,” says Mrudul, who recently appeared for the Std X.
