The Wolf Gang

UK-based band RaOol’s debut song is topping popularity charts globally.

UK-based band RaOol’s debut song is topping popularity charts globally.

With heavy bass, trippy hip-hop beats and cheeky lyrics,RaOol’s debut single Meri Rani (Set to blow) is topping music charts in India and the UK. The new club bangers on the block are Australian singer-songwriter D Wunder and UK-based DJ-producer Macks Wolf, who met on a social networking website in 2010 and exchanged music online. In December 2012,they started working together to devise a distinctive sound of their own and soon came up with a title for the collective. “When Wunder introduced me to the music of Rahul Dev Burman,I became an instant fan. In jest,I suggested using the name ‘Rahul’ as the name of our act. It stuck and Wunder coined the now-renowned ‘Raooooool’ howl, from which the Wolf logo was born. The capital ‘O’ in our name symbolises that very howl,” says Wolf, who started DJing when he was 12.

The video, which released on March 19,has the duo jamming with ‘Zeus The Wolf’,where they are joined by a queen clad in a sultry red outfit. Smoke, raining sparks, broken glass and flame throwers — the video features everything that catches the duo’s fancy. “Every girl has an inner wolf and we wanted to make it obvious in the video. But hiring a real wolf is really difficult because they’re a protected species. Luckily,a friend in Leicester had a dog,Zeus, that he said was pretty wolf-like,” says Wunder.

The “wolf” has now become a star. He even has his own Twitter account and Facebook page. “Zeus loves the limelight and it was clear when we made the video that it was going to be his way or the highway,” says Wunder. He adds that their first video has the highest quality the UK-Asian music scene has ever seen. “That’s not boasting,it actually is,given that it’s the first 4k video, which is twice the resolution quality of 1080p HD,” he says.

While Wunder comes from a hip-hop background with influences by artistes like 2pac,Snoop Lion as well as Red Hot Chilli Peppers,he is enchanted by the music of Bollywood blockbusters like Hum,Sholay,Phool Aur Kaante,1942 — A Love Story and Taal. “I grew up surrounded by mum and dad’s fascination with garba raas, ghazals, bhajans, bhangra and a whole heap of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. My slightly irresponsible cousin made me a tape of Snoop’s first album when I was eight and so began my journey into the world of rap, hence my individual style is hip-hop based,” he says.

Wolf is a fan of synth pop bands such as Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk, however, his music is also influenced by Bee Gees,The Pet Shop Boys,The Kinks and other music that he grew up listening to in his mother’s car. The duo is eagerly looking for an opportunity to perform in India and presently working on another track titled Dhuwan.
