As many as 30,726 students from Pune will appear for the Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET) on Thursday; the number is 2.85 lakh across the state.

According to the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER),candidates giving engineering CET have increased by 10,000 from the previous year while those writing the medical CET have gone up by 5,663. And those appearing for both have increased by 20,000 .

Against 88,300 engineering seats available in the state, around 18,000 seats are in Pune,70 per cent of which is in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad city limits. There are 34,000 medical seats in the state, around 4,500 of which are in Pune.

The CET has three papers: Paper I – Physics,Chemistry (50 marks each); Paper II – Botany,Zoology (50 marks each) and Paper III – Maths (100 marks). Those looking for health science courses should appear for Paper I and II while those opting for engineering degree courses should appear for Paper I and III. Those appearing for both streams should write all papers.

According to Kedar Takalkar who conducts coaching classes for MHT-CET,students should be given question papers 10 minutes before the exam as per rules. “Many a time, the supervisors distribute the question papers only two-three minutes before the exam. The 10-minute gap is necessary so that students can go through the papers before writing the answers. In case of problems in the question paper,it is important for the students to remember the question numbers as the question papers are to be returned with the answersheets.”

Grievance cells have been set up at all exam centres that will function from 8 am. “In case of any grievance during this period regarding loss of time due to administrative error or any other examination-related matters, the candidate should report to the invigilator of his/her examination block. The invigilator,in turn, will communicate the same to the sub centre in-charge through a supervisor. The grievance committee will examine the issue on the spot and take the necessary decision,” said Medical Education and Research director WB Tayde.
