The Savitribai Phule Pune University announced a ‘carry forward’ policy on Thursday for the 2025-26 academic year, allowing students with backlogs to progress to the next academic year. This development came after multiple protests on campus by groups such as the National Students Union of India.

The notification—issued by Deputy Registrar Professor S. D. Davkhar—will help students who had been rendered ineligible for promotion to the next academic year due to backlogs. Provisional promotions to the next academic year will be allowed depending on multiple conditions being met. The results of the winter 2025–26 exams and success in clearing the backlogs will decide whether the provisional promotion will be continued.

Students will have to submit a formal undertaking to their respective colleges to accept full responsibility for completing academic requirements like attendance, coursework, practicals, field visits, and internal assessments.

In a statement, the NSUI said, “Since July 8, students and the Congress’s student wing had been fighting for their rightful demands. Today, the struggle has finally succeeded. Over the past one and a half months of continuous efforts, we had staged two protests to press our demand. Today, during the third protest, as we stood firm and confronted the administration, they immediately agreed to all our demands.”

Akshay Jain, president of Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress’ Media Department, said, “Our fight for students’ rights, ongoing for the past one-and-a-half months, has finally succeeded today. This was our third protest. The decision to grant special concessions to all courses in the science stream is not just a victory for us – the Student Congress or Youth Congress – but for every student. This struggle proves that unity and persistent effort always bring change. The university administration had to take note of our protest, and I sincerely thank them for this decision!”
