Three sherpa guides who will be part of the’Pune Everest 2012’ expedition organised by the Giripremi mountaineering group,are in the city to promote the expedition. On Friday,Wangchu Sherpa,Kame Sherpa and Pemba Sherpa gave a brief introduction to the event that will be held on Saturday at Abasaheb Garware College,Karve Road. The trio will recount their experiences of climbing the highest summit on earth twice,11 times and four times respectively,and try to garner more support for the Pune group. The Giripremi expedition will comprise eight members and 12 support staff,apart from the assistance of seven sherpas. The official announcement about the expedition was made in January this year,but the preparations have been on for nearly four years. Before the climbing begins,the group has embarked on a promotional drive to raise the Rs 3.15 crore required to purchase their equipment and pay royalties. “Some basic equipment has been sourced from Kathmandu,but a lot is pending,” said Umesh Zirpe from Giripremi.

IT football: Syntel trounce Capgemini

Syntel defeated Capgemini 4-0 in the ninth edition of the inter-IT football tournament at Rangehills Ground,Khadki. While Capgemini opened the scoring with a goal by Swapnil Deshmukh in the 13th minute,they couldn’t hold on to the lead. Rahul Pawar equalised for Syntel in the 21st minute,after which Praveen Malgekar scored a brace in the 38th and 44th minute to put the game beyond their reach. Gabriel Sequeira sealed the game for Syntel by scoring in the 44th minute.

In another match,Tech Mahindra beat SQS-India 2-0. Victor Angre and Anup Sawant scored the two goals in the 27th and 36th minute respectively. Meanwhile,IBM,Symantec and HSBC won their league encounters against MphasiS,ADP and Honeywell.

Bhave wins rapid chess tournament

Kaushik Bhave won the 23rd edition of the Weekly Rapid Chess Championship organised by Sports Star Club,Bibwewadi. Bhave scored 6.0 points 22.0 Buchals to win the trophy as well as Rs 1,000. Pushkaraj Bedekar came in second with a score of 6.0 21.5 Buchals and Sohan Barkale was placed third with a score of 5.5 points 23.0 Buchals. A total of 64 players,including 15 ranked ones,had participated,said a press release.

U-13 chess tourney from August 24

The Buddhibal Kreeda Trust will organise an under-13 state-level chess championship from August 24-27. The event will be sponsored by Bank Of Maharashtra. The tour d 80 Players,20 girls and 60 boys from 15 districts in the state have confirmed their entries for the event,being conducted by Maharashtra Chess Association.

Prominent players like world U-10 Bronze medalist Abhimanyu Puranik (FIDE rating 1924),Pora Kolgane (FIDE rating 1811),former state U-13 champion Nikhil Dixit (FIDE rating 1813),will participate in the boys section while in girls Rutuja Bakshi from Aurangabad (FIDE rating 1803),Nimita Joshi(FIDE rating 1600),Tanmayee Gange from Mumbai(FIDE rating 1593),Vishwa Shah(FIDE rating 1544),Aditi Jori (FIDE rating 1486) have confirmed their entries. The total prize money for the event is Rs 15,000,with the winner getting Rs 2,000 and a Trophy.
