Changing lives

December 15 saw the release of the Umesh Kulkarni-directed film Wadi, which is based on BAIF Development Research Foundation’s model of tribal rehabilitation. The film was released by B G Deshmukh, chairman,Executive Committee of BAI,who said,“The film focuses on our work and has an emotional touch. I hope this movie reaches out to many people.” The cast and crew of this 35-minute film were felicitated at the event, after which the audience sat in raptured silence as the film unfolded before them. “I really appreciate the fact that the organization approached us to shoot a movie on the same issue. The whole shooting period was very inspiring,” said Kulkarni.

Learning the ropes

If film-making is what interests you, then here’s your chance to learn its nuances from two well-known directors Amit Kumar and Manish Tiwary, who will be conducting a day-long workshop on December 19. Film-making is a long process that involves script writing, shooting, directing, editing and so on. The two directors will cover the entire process and even share their own experiences. This cinema workshop will be held at Neelesh Kanade Group,Bhosale Mystiqa,Model Colony. Tiwary, who is is currently working on the pre-production of his upcoming film, says,“ I have conducted workshops with members of Cambridge University Film Society and tutored undergraduate students at Cambridge and Yale. But in no way does this lessen the challenge and the excitement of interacting with budding filmmakers in Pune.” He hopes that the workshop will succeed in creating a wise audience. He adds,“We need an audience that is inquisitive and appreciative of cinema and independent film-making.” Kumar, who is an FTII graduate and a BAFTA member, has won accolades for his film The Bypass. It is his sheer passion that drives him. He says,“At the workshop,we won’t try and teach a gospel truth…we all have our own paths and approaches towards film-making. What is important is that the audience realise that they can have theirs too.” The workshop will include screenings, introduction to the elements of film-making,preparing the film – casting, locations, storyboard, making the film – shooting and post-production.
