The Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) of India has declared a state-wide agitation to protest against the improper implementation of the governments post Matric scholarship scheme meant for students of economically weaker sections of minority communities. SIO has claimed that about half of the funds sanctioned is not utilised.
At a press conference on Tuesday, the Pune unit of SIO said the Central government had fixed a target of 48,157 post matric scholarships for meritorious students from economically weaker sections of minority communities, including Buddhist,Christian,Muslim,Sikh and Parsi. But due to allegedly improper implementation, thousands of students do not get information about the scholarship scheme.
In 2009-10,for 64,400 scholarships, only 24,000 were sanctioned by the state government with fund for 40,000 scholarships not being utilised, said SIOs scholarship cell for Maharashtra chief Nadeem Rasoul Shaikh.
For 2010-2011,for 48,157,hardly over 20,000 applications have been uploaded so far. The last date for filing applications is September 15. Not many forms are expected. So funds for thousands of scholarships would not be utilised again, he said.
SIO,Maharashtra,Campus Secretary Shaikh Mohammed Ali said,The government got about Rs 40 crore for the scholarship scheme and is supposed to use 2 per cent of it for advertising so that more students from minority sections get to know about it. But the government machinery is not active and thus information about the scheme is not even displayed in many colleges.
From this year, the government has decided to accept the application forms online. But the website designed for the purpose is faulty, Ali said.
