Shivaji Road in Pune to be closed every night until August 25, here’s why

The Pune traffic police have announced alternative routes during the closure of Shivaji Road.

The Pune city traffic police Monday announced a complete closure of the arterial Shivaji Road from 10 pm to 6 am every night until August 25. This closure is to facilitate construction work for the memorial being developed at the site of the first girls’ school established by social reformer Savitribai Phule. During this time, traffic on Shivaji Road will be directed via alternative routes.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav in the notification stated, “The traffic from Budhwar Chowk on Shivaji Road is required to be completely stopped at night.”

The notification listed alternative routes during the closure of the road. To go from SG Barve Chowk towards Swargate, vehicles should use the route from SG Barve Chowk via Jangali Maharaj Road, Khandojibaba Chowk and Tilak Road. To reach the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), vehicles should use the route from SG Barve Chowk via Jangali Maharaj Road, Jhansichi Rani Chowk, and then turn left towards the PMC.

The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses coming from Daruwala Bridge to Phadke Haud and Jijamata Chowk will need to take a detour at Devajibaba Chowk, turn left for Hamjekhan Chowk, and reach their destination via Lakshmi Road.

All four-wheelers coming from Appa Balwant Chowk towards Budhwar Chowk will be stopped. The alternative route is via Budhwar Chowk, Bijli Shop, Shrikrushna Talkies, City Post and Lakshmi Road. Traffic coming from Kumbhar Ves Chowk towards Gadgil Putla, Shivaji Road will be diverted via Dengle Bridge and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) office.
