School principal from Pune drowns at Kashid beach in Raigad

THE Principal of a Pune-based school drowned in Kashid beach in Raigad district of Maharashtra on Friday afternoon, police said on Saturday.

Raigad district police have identified the deceased as Dharmendra Deshmukh (55), principal of Mahatma Jyotirav Phule High School in Pisoli in Haveli taluka of Pune district.

He was a part of a group of about 12 people, mainly teachers, who came to Raigad district for a picnic on Friday morning at Kashid beach in Murud.

Police said Deshmukh was swimming along with some teachers but was spotted drowning in the sea water in the afternoon. Teachers accompanying Deshmukh and the beach rescue team brought him out of water.

“Deshmukh was rushed to a primary health care centre in Borli. Soon, he was shifted to the Alibag Civil Hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital around 2.44pm,” said police inspector Namdev Bandgar of Murud police station.

An accidental death (AD) report was filed at the Murud police station and further investigation is underway, said a police officer.
