Sassoon Hospital: Arm transplant features in American Society of Plastic Surgeons Newsletter
It was a difficult surgery and the government hospital surgeons were able to replant the patient's hand after it had been amputated.

Little did plastic surgeons at the government-run B J Medical College and Sassoon general hospital know that their feat of successfully replanting a 22-year-old patient’s right hand would figure in the latest edition of the American Society of plastic surgeons’ newsletter. It was a difficult surgery and the government hospital surgeons were able to replant the patient’s hand after it had been amputated.
Dr Parag Sahasrabudhe, professor and head, Department of Plastic Surgery, B J Government Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital had earlier told The Indian Express that on May 23, a youth’s right arm had been amputated at the forearm level while he was operating a dough-kneading machine in Baramati at 6am that day. He was rushed to Sassoon Hospital where teamwork between various departments like plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery, anesthetists, intensivists, operating room and TICU/ward staff nurses, helped in the man’s successful recovery.
The Indian Express report from June 10 on the hand replant at Sassoon General Hospital was published in the August 2024 issue of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ newsletter. Dr Sahasrabudhe said it was a moment of pride for the entire team.
Dr Eknath Pawar, Dean, B J Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital congratulated the team and when contacted, told The Indian Express that several modern techniques were being utilised to ensure the patient’s speedy recovery. Dr Pawar said that they also recently performed a kidney transplant on a 13-year-old girl from Daund.
Dr Sahasrabudhe said they were now performing 100-120 plastic surgery procedures every month. “We also get complicated cases from other districts,” he said.
“Surgeons also perform procedures like rhinoplasty, breast implant surgery and others. With the introduction of PG course in plastic surgery in 2014, there has been a consistent flow of students and we are exposing them to all sub specialities like how to perform burns reconstruction, trauma reconstruction and post cancer reconstruction procedures,” he added
