Remove vendors around Dagdusheth: cops

The city police have demanded removal of hawkers and other structures around the Dagdusheth Ganpati temple in Budhwar Peth due to security concerns.

The city police have demanded removal of hawkers and other structures around the Dagdusheth Ganpati temple in Budhwar Peth due to security concerns. But the civic administration has not been able to act as some of the vendors are authorised to carry out business around the temple and removing them will be illegal.

After it was revealed that the temple is on the terror hit-list,the city police have been taking extra security measures with the help of the temple trust. According to the Indian Mujahideen (IM) suspect arrested in New Delhi, the IM had planned to attack the temple the same day it had targeted German Bakery in Koregaon Park on February 13 last year. However, the plan failed due to the alertness of a flower seller.

According to temple trust office-bearers,the police have written to them, seeking removal of street vendors around the temple for security reasons. The police have also asked to remove dustbins and public toilets from the area, saying it might be used by miscreants. Since the temple is along the main city road, there is fear that the miscreants might throw something at the temple to harm devotees.

Therefore, the police have suggested construction of a compound wall around the temple to help prevent any problem. The trust has urged the civic administration to fulfil the demands made by city police. “We have written to the PMC as all the security measures suggested by the police can be carried out only by the civic body. It is up to

the civic administration to implement them,” said a trust letter to the civic body.

The vendors doing business in the area have objected to such a move. “We have closed our shops on the directions of civic official. We are authorised vendors and it was illegal to stop us from doing business,” said a vendor.

PMC anti-encroachment department in-charge Ramesh Shelar said the civic administration cannot remove the authorised vendors from doing business around the temple.

“There are legal difficulties in implementing the police suggestion. The vendors should approach the city police and convince them to keep the business of vendors intact,” he said.
