The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has achieved the 173rd rank in the QS Asia University Rankings, 2025, published on November 6. This is an improvement of 37 ranks compared to the previous year when the University had secured the 210th rank. The rankings were topped by Peking University in China, The University of Hong Kong, and National University of Singapore.

The SPPU saw an increase in score in all measurement parameters like Papers per Faculty, Citations per Paper, Staff with PhD, International Research Network, and Employer Reputation, except Outbound Exchange.

Although the University has a great score of 82.1 in Papers per Faculty, it struggles in Citations per Paper with a score of just 7.4. International Students (score 12.5) and International Faculty (score 2.5) are also the University’s weak points that pulled the overall score down.

SPPU Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Parag Kalkar commented on the ranking and said, “Congratulations to all the stakeholders of the University for achieving 173rd rank in the QS ASIA 2025 Ranking. This upward movement is a proud achievement for us. In Maharashtra State, we are the topmost State University once again. SPPU has always nurtured intellectuals and their contributions to the development of this nation makes me proud to be a part of this great University.”

“The parameter where we have scored well is the International Research Network. The MoU signed by SPPU with various global HEI has increased our ranking. Area that we should focus on is faculty recruitment. The faculty-student ratio needs improvement. This is already being done. Another area is to increase exchange programmes for students and faculty and try to bring international faculty on campus for teaching. The second parameter is employee perception. This data is collected about SPPU from companies where students work. Our internship portal and the outreach created through the University has boosted the image,” added Dr Kalkar.

Other than the SPPU, the Symbiosis International (Deemed) University from Pune achieved a rank of 216 compared to last year’s rank range of 261-270. The Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed) University, Pune, is a new entrant in the list and achieved a rank in the range of 851-900.
