Pune: Woman falls into 100-foot-deep gorge after bees attack tourists at Rajgad Fort

An official from Welhe police station said: “At Suwela Machi, a swarm of bees from a nearby beehive galvanised and the bees suddenly attacked the Warat couple and their family members. We now know that Rohini Warat lost her spectacles while running for safety and fell into the gorge around 100 feet deep. Coincidentally, a group of trekkers, who are also rescuers, were on the fort for a trek. The group rescued Rohini Warat and brought her to a location from where she could be moved to a hospital. Meanwhile, the police had been informed and a team from the Welhe police station rushed to the spot.”

The officer said: “Some other tourists present in the area may have also been attacked by bees. But by the time the police arrived, they had left the area.”

In a similar incident, in the last week of March, a group of 11 IT professionals who had gone for a trek to the Kataldhar waterfalls near Lonavala in Pune were attacked by a swarm of bees, leaving eight of them seriously injured.

On March 13, at least 200 tourists who were visiting the historic Shivneri Fort located in Junnar taluka of Pune district were stung by bees. At least 25 of them required medical assistance and were discharged after primary treatment at a local government hospital. The incident took place when a large number of tourists were visiting the historic military fort located on a hill in the Junnar area.
