With municipal council and gram panchayat elections scheduled in December, Pune divisional commissioner S Chockolingam has urged all young voters who have attained the age of 18 years as on January 1, 2016, to register as a voter.
In Pune division, 41 municipal councils and 10 gram panchayats would be carrying out the election process. All issues related to voters’ registration and voters’ list updation would be completed by August 31 and voters would have to make corrections and deletions ahead of this date, Chockolingam said.
In Pune, Baramati, Lonavala, Daund, Talegaon, Alandi, Indapur, Jejuri, Junnar, Saswad and Shirur would see municipal council elections. In Satara, it would be Karad, Phaltan, Wai, Rehmatpur, Panchgani, Mahaba-leshwar and Mhaswad.
In Sangli, Islampur, Vita, Ashta and Tasgaon would witness municipal council polls. For Solapur, it would be Barshi, Pandharpur, Mangalvedha, Maidargi, Sangola, Karmala, Durdhani, Akkalkot and Kuduwadi. In Kolhapur, Ichal-karanji, Jaisingpur, Kurundwad, Vadgaon, Malkapur, Panhala, Kagal, Murgud and Gadhinglaj would see council elections.
Addressing a press meet on Monday, Chockolingam said that the ward demarcation process is on and it would be completed soon. He said that voters can address the issues of names in the voters’ list at the respective councils, ward, universities and tehsil offices. He urged voters to come out and vote for the right candidate to address their concerns related to civic issues.
The divisional commissioner said that SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter are being used to urge voters to update their names in the voters’ list. The request would also be placed with the local cable networks and All India Radio, as well as societies, universities and industrial places.
