March 12 was officially the hottest day for Pune this year with multiple automatic weather stations (AWS) in the district reporting temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. Koregaon Park was the hottest in the city with the highest temperature of 40.2 being recorded there. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised people to take adequate care to ensure no heat related fatalities occur.

Over the last few days Lohegaon and Koregaon Park have sizzled above 40 degrees. At 40.7 Rajgurunagar was the hottest area in the district on Wednesday. Shivajinagar’s AWS recorded maximum temperature of 38.2 degrees with other areas also being equally high. S D Sanap, IMD scientist, said clear skies and a general lack of moisture in the air has resulted in the rise of temperature across the state.

An anti-cyclonic circulation over the coast of Gujarat was also preventing the entry of moisture in the air, Sanap said. “As a result of the combined activities temperatures are on the rise and will continue to do so the next few days,” he said. North Konkan and Mumbai have already reported heatwaves, with parts of Gujarat also reporting the same.

While Pune’s surrounding area have not technically reported heatwaves, the extreme temperatures can be fatal if not taken seriously. He added that the present temperature range would continue for the next few days and the IMD recommends being cautious.

While moving out in the afternoon or during the daytime, precautions like covering one’s head and carrying water should be done, he said. Staying hydrated must also be a priority and hot and spicy food should be avoided, he added.
