(Representational Image)A speeding car hit a police constable, who was on surveillance duty in Pune as part of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, and further dragged him through the road up to 20 feet at Bhakti Shakti Chowk in Nigdi early on Friday.
The injured constable Santosh Shinde, attached to the Pimpri-Chinchwad police headquarters, is part of the Static Surveillance Team (SST) conducting vehicle checks ahead of the November 20 Assembly elections, the police said.
Investigators said a probe is on to identify and arrest the accused car driver who escaped from the spot.
According to the police, the incident occurred at 12.25 am when Shinde who was at the Bhakti Shakti Chowk signalled the car driver to stop. “The driver refused to stop and hit the barricade in front of Shinde, dragged him along with the barricade for about 20 feet,” said an officer.
The police have booked the car driver under sections 132, 121(1), 281,125(+), 324(4) of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and sections of the Motor Vehicle Act.
