The new Covid-19 variant JN.1 is yet to be detected in Pimpri-Chinchwad but with 18 active Covid cases in the city, the civic body has appealed to citizens to use masks in public places.

“The new variant is not severe but we would like to appeal to citizens, especially vulnerable groups, to wear masks when they are in crowded places,” Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Commissioner Shekhar Singh told The Indian Express on Friday.

“There is nothing to fear but we should remain alert and take care. Vulnerable groups like senior citizens, those suffering from diabetes, blood pressure or serious ailments should start using masks on their own,” Singh added.

“Our hospitals are ready. We can immediately make them available for Covid patients but as of now, we are not seeing any trend of hospitalisation. All hospital beds are equipped with oxygen,” Singh said.

Meanwhile, the PCMC medical department said there are 18 active Covid cases in the city. “These patients have mild symptoms…Of the 18, four are undergoing treatment in hospitals and others are recovering at home,” said Dr Laxman Gofane, Medical Health Officer, PCMC.

The civic administration said that in light of the rising Covid cases in the state, the government has advised civic bodies to take the necessary steps to tackle the situation in case of a spike in cases.
