The Pune Municipal Corporation’s maternal death review committee that plays a crucial role in investigating maternal deaths by identifying causes, medical and systemic issues will submit its report on Tanisha Bhise’s case on Tuesday.
Dr Nina Borade, chairperson of the committee and chief medical officer of PMC said a meeting was held by the members and the report will be finalised soon. Tanisha Bhise, in her early 30s, died after giving birth to premature twins. Family members alleged Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital failed to admit the woman, who was in her seventh month of pregnancy, as an advance deposit of Rs 10 lakh was not paid.
The woman had sought treatment at Surya Hospitals, Wakad where she gave birth to premature twins on March 29. She was shifted to Manipal Hospital later due to complications and died on March 31 due to irreversible brain damage.
Dr Borade explained that the review committee generally conducts in-depth reviews of maternal deaths to understand the underlying causes including medical social and systemic factors. “The aim is not to assign blame but identify opportunities for improvement and prevent future maternal deaths,” Dr Borade added.
“We try to ascertain whether there was a delay in reporting to the hosptial by the patient or whether there was a delay in availing an ambulance,” she said. The committee also checks whether there was a delay from the hospital in initiating treatment.
“We have discussed Tanisha Bhise’s case and our committee’s report will be submitted to higher authorities in the health department, “Dr Borade said.
