Chai is more than a beverage- it’s a ritual, a conversation starter, and for many, a pause in the city’s daily rush. In Pune, from Irani cafes that have stood the test of time to modern chai thali concepts and wellness brews, the city’s tea culture has evolved without losing its warmth, continuing to draw Punekars back for more. Vohuman Café, Sangamwadi- Brewing Bonds Since 1978 Established on August 16, 1978, Vohuman Cafe in Sangamwadi has become routine with Pune’s old-world charm. Known for its strong Irani chai, the cafe continues to draw loyal patrons who come as much for the warmth of the place as for the tea itself. “Irani chai is brewed for almost an hour. It’s strong, and you either love it or hate it,” said owner Sarosh Irani, adding that the cafe’s “sophisticated tapri” ambience makes people feel at home. Most customers are regulars who return not just for the tea, but for the comfort of familiarity-bun maska, omelets, and endless conversations, he told The Indian Express. Chotu Tapriwala, Baner- The Chai Thali Revolution In Baner, Chotu Tapriwala has turned the idea of chai into an experience with its trademark-registered Chai Thali. Established in 2018, the cafe’s owner Swapnil Gangwal describes it as “a place where both a rickshaw driver and a person in a Mercedes feel equally welcome.” The cafe, designed with traditional Bhartiya Baithak seating and a homely ambience, emphasizes comfort and affordability. “We focus on hygiene, customer experience, and inclusivity,” Gangwal said. The adrak(ginger) chai remains the top choice, while the chai thali attracts families from across Pune-and even regulars from Mumbai. Cafe Bun Maska, Kondhwa - The People’s Tea Stop For Ghulam Mohsin Muzajawar, owner of Cafe Bun Maska in Kondhwa, loyalty is brewed through consistency and connection. “Our quality has remained the same for 12 years, and we share a personal bond with customers,” he said. The cafe’s Irani chai, priced at just rupees 25, remains its biggest draw. “Some people say their day doesn’t feel complete until they’ve had our tea,” Muzajawar added. Beyond chai, the cafe serves breakfast and full meals, making it a go-to spot for families, students, and professionals alike. Bai Mu Dan, Koregaon Park- Wellness in Every Sip Amid Koregaon Park’s cafe culture, Bai Mu Dan stands out for its non-caffeinated, wellness-oriented teas. The cafe manufactures its own blends- Powerhouse, Breather, Sacred Space, and Soul Catcher- each designed for a specific purpose. “These teas help customers feel better, not just energized,” said the cafe’s manager, who requested anonymity. Their signature Clouded Matcha, made with coconut water and whipped matcha, draws a steady crowd of health-conscious patrons. According to her, the idea behind Bai Mu Dan is to encourage people to slow down and be mindful about what they consume. “We want people to feel calm, grounded, and connected with themselves while sipping our teas,” she said. The cafe’s focus is not just on flavour but on creating an experience that nourishes both the body and the mind. Kannu Ki Chai- A Tea Chain Brewing Consistency With over 40 outlets across India, Kannu Ki Chai has built a reputation on hygiene, speed, and consistency. “Hygiene and customer service come first,” said Swapnil Morale, shift manager at the Viman Nagar outlet.
