Pune airport clocks a record 1 crore passenger traffic in 2024

In a first, Pune International Airport (PIA) crossed the 1 crore passenger mark in 2024, recording around 8 per cent growth in passenger traffic compared to 2023. The airport also recorded the highest-ever passenger volume in December, according to stats.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has released its December passenger movement data for Pune Airport, revealing that approximately 9.54 lakh passengers travelled through the airport in a single month. Of these, there were 9.20 lakh and 33,337 domestic and international travellers respectively.

Of the total 1.01 crore passengers in 2024, there were 98.97 lakh (up by 7 per cent) domestic travellers and 2.04 lakh (20 pc increase) international travellers, it said.

In 2023, the airport recorded a traffic of 94.39 lakh passengers.

Pune Airport Director Santosh Dhoke expressed satisfaction with the continuous rise in passenger numbers, stating that a 7-8 percent annual growth rate is considered healthy for an airport. He credited the increase to the introduction of new flights and regional connectivity initiatives launched in 2024.

International passenger traffic in December 2024 saw a sharp 60 per cent increase compared to the previous month, while domestic traffic grew by 6 per cent.

Regarding the rise in international travel, Dhoke highlighted the positive impact of new international services.

“Earlier, we had only two international flights. Now, we have added three more: two for Bangkok and one for Dubai,” he said.

As per official data, the airport handles an average of 17,000 international passengers and approximately 8.24 lakh domestic passengers per month. The figures are based on records from January to December 2024.

Additionally, the airport also recorded its highest-ever flight movement in the December second week with 204 flights operating within 24 hours—102 departures and 102 arrivals, according to airport officials.
