Even as the Centre tabled the proposal to amend the Right to Information (RTI) Act 2005,a group of Puneites staged a protest against the move.
Led by RTI activists, the group protested opposite Balgandharva Ranga Mandir on JM Road. The amendment sought by the government plans to exclude political parties from the purview of the Act.
Activists Vijay Kumbhar,Vivek Velankar,Jugal Rathi,Vinita Deshmukh, representatives of Aam Admi Party (AAP) Rajesh Mittal and Bhanu Mulay were present at the protest. Kumbhar stated that the RTI Act had brought about an era of transparency and accountability and that by trying to keep political parties out of the Act,politicians were trying to save themselves from accountability.
Nihar Thatte,an IT professional, joined the protest because he felt the Act was under threat. A regular participant in the fortnightly discussions organised by Velankar,Thatte stated that by using RTI,many city residents managed to make the government accountable. RTI has allowed me to know how the tax payers money is spent. By trying to wriggle out of the RTI Act,political parties are trying to harm the Act. The parties get money from tax payers and should be under the Act, he said.
