Post survey,GSDA recommends a well every 3 km in watershed areas

As the district stares at depleting ground water levels,a survey on ground water levels conducted by Groundwater Survey and Development Agency (GSDA) has suggested that a well be dug at every three km of watershed areas in various parts of the district.

The report has also sought digging of 192 wells. GSDA has surveyed 3,920 observation wells. Out of 57 taluks in the division,the groundwater level has been depleted by one metre in 23 taluks,while in nine taluks,the water level has been depleted in the range of 1-2 metres according to the survey.The district authorities having arranged for tankers to meet the water shortage. Of the 13 taluks in the district,11 have depleting ground water levels according to a survey.

In the district,the survey shows that water levels have gone below 1 metre in four taluks,while it was less than 1metre in six taluks,while interestingly the hilly terrain of Bhor,Maval and Mulshi shows a marginal rise in groundwater levels. In the district,only Purandar taluk registered a dip of more than 2 metres.

The agency makes observations on the recharge and discharge pattern of groundwater between January and March.
