Police officer tries to stop quarrel, attacked with machete

A police officer was attacked with a koyta (machete) when he tried to stop a quarrel near Sasane Nagar railway gate in Hadapsar around 4 pm on Sunday.

The injured police officer was identified as Ratnadeep Gaikwad, an assistant police inspector attached to Wanavdi police station.

Police identified the assailant as Nihalsingh Tak. Police said Tak and his accomplice were in a quarrel with two persons on a two-wheeler near Sasane Nagar railway gate, and they received information that Tak was carrying a koyta. Gaikwad rushed to the spot to stop the quarrel and seize the weapon. However, when he reached the spot, Tak threw the koyta at him, injuring him on the head. Tak and his aide then fled the spot on a motorcycle.

Deputy Commissioner of Police R Raja said the injured police officer was taken to a hospital for treatment. “The injury is serious, but there is no threat to his life. We have deployed teams to nab the accused,” said Raja.
