Pune police have busted a gang of autorickshaw drivers who would rob vulnerable passengers while ferrying them during odd hours. A probe revealed that these auto drivers used fake registration plates when committing the thefts to give the police a slip.
A team from Swargate police station were probing a case wherein a Telangana native working in Pune was robbed by an autorickshaw driver. The victim had hired the rickshaw from Katraj Bibwewadi bus stand to go home. The driver had stopped near Gangadham on the pretext of taking a call. At this point, the driver and other suspects threatened the passenger and robbed him of his cell phone, silver chain and cash.
While investigating, the police team examined footage from about 150 CCTV cameras and cross referenced the leads with cell phone data. They first zeroed on a suspect identified as Rohit Chavan (23) and subsequently detained his accomplices Mayur Chavan (19) and Sudarshan Kamble (22). A search is on for their fourth aide.
Police inspector Yuvraj Nandre of Swargate police station said, “These suspects are rickshaw drivers. The probe suggests that they targeted vulnerable passengers like elderly persons, and those who are not from Pune or those who are inebriated. These suspects threaten the victims, rob them and beat them up before leaving them at secluded locations.”
The probe also brought to light the fact that the suspects would change the rickshaw number plates to avoid being detected. Police have recovered the cell phone and silver chain they snatched from the Telangana man.
