With the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) allocating funds for the inner ring road in its 2024-25 budget, it has given the long-delayed project a significant boost, facilitating the land acquisition and tender process for phases one and two.
Confirming the development, Ashok Bhalkar, Chief Engineer of PMRDA, said, “This will speed up the work on the proposed project to ease traffic in Pune city.”
“The allocation has enabled us to take up two processes at the same time. We have started the land acquisition process and sought quotation for the development of the Solu Interchange-Vadgaon Shinde stretch and the Ahmednagar Road-Solapur Road-Satara Road stretch,” Bhalkar added.

However, the land acquisition process is lengthy so it will take more than six months for the actual work to begin, he further said.
In 2016, the Maharashtra government declared PMRDA as the developing authority for the proposed ring road, which aims to divert heavy vehicular traffic and reduce traffic congestion in Pune city. The project is also expected to facilitate the development of suburban areas by connecting them to the main road.
The PMRDA had proposed a 128.08 km-long inner ring road. A 40 km stretch will be developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and around 6 km by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The PMRDA will develop the remaining 83 km long and 65 metre wide inner ring road.
The project will be developed in four phases – Solu Interchange-Vadgaon Shinde (4.7 km), Pune-Ahmednagar Road to Solapur Road (71.89 km), Pune-Solapur Road to Pune-Satara Road (21.23 km) and Pune-Satara Road to Parandwadi Interchange (44.80 km).
