After directives from the state government,the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC),which is struggling to prevent encroachment on roads and pavements,will jointly work with social organisations and the hawkers union to identify locations to rehabilitate them.
The civic administration has been taking action against hawkers on 45 main roads of the city as they have been creating problems in traffic management.
We will take action against hawkers who flout guidelines issued by the Supreme Court and the state government, said Rajendra Jagtap, Additional Municipal Commissioner .
He said the court has set timings for hawkers to carry out their business besides other conditions,which need to be followed religiously by them to avoid action.
Jagtap said the civic administration is committed to implement the hawkers policy and rehabilitate them at appropriate locations across the city. The civic officers,representatives of hawkers union,and social organisations would work together to finalise locations.
There are as many as 20,000 hawkers in the city. The civic administration has planned to start daily,weekly and fortnightly markets for them. The civic body is looking for locations that are close to main city roads and densely populated areas. There is a growing demand to allow hawkers operate from no-vehicle zones for selected hours so that citizens can take advantage of the situation.
